Found an injured bird?
Have you found a bird that might need help?
Thank you for caring about raptors! Birds can need rescuing in a variety of situations, including injuries, sickness, or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. But, sometimes, a bird may appear like it needs help but doesn’t.
Because each situation is different, we recommend you call us at 605-519-2008.
One of our knowledgeable volunteers will walk you through the next steps, and arrange a rescue team if necessary. Please note that we are permitted to rescue and rehabilitate birds of prey, and cannot accept other species of birds or wildlife. Permit number: MBPER37503957.
If you find an injured raptor, follow these steps:
1. Take a photo.
2. Note the location with as much detail as possible.
3. Call 605-519-2008. Our phone line is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. all days of the year.
4. Do not offer any food or water to an injured raptor. Raptors have very specific dietary needs and even the best meat available may be inappropriate. Often injured raptors are suffering from dehydration and/or emaciation, so food or water may kill it.
5. Do not touch the bird unless you’re instructed to do so, or it’s absolutely necessary (if it’s on a busy road or other perilous location). The less contact a bird has with people, the more likely it will be to survive. Stress is deadly for these birds. If you must touch the bird, use leather gloves, a towel, or something similar.
6. Even a seemingly helpless raptor can be dangerous. Birds will be frightened and may perceive you as a threat. Be particularly wary of the beak and talons. Bald Eagles and Turkey Vultures tend to bite.
7. If you are moving or transporting the bird, a dog kennel is best, a right-sized cardboard box is second best. Place a towel on the bottom of the crate or box. Wire crates can damage feathers, which will prolong recovery. We love seeing the raptors fly free, but flying free in your vehicle is not recommended.
